The nearby communities of Durham
and Raleigh
offer a variety of living, shopping, commercial, and entertainment
opportunities. Interstate 40 makes travel from Chapel
Hill to the Research
Triangle Park, Raleigh
easy to accomplish. A drive to the Raleigh-Durham International
Airport is 20 minutes from Chapel Hill. You can be in Raleigh
in 30 minutes and a trip to Wilmington beaches is about two
hours of easy driving. The North Carolina mountains—a
three-hour drive to the west—provide fine recreational
opportunities for those who enjoy hiking, camping, and the natural
beauty available with a drive on the Blue
Ridge Parkway.

The Triangle
Area has great entertainment to offer. Cultural activities,
which feature very fine talent, are available year-around.
UNC's
theatrical and musical fare is complimented by nearby
Duke
University in Durham. The
American Dance Festival, hosted each summer on the Duke
campus, features some of the best dance companies in the United
States. The Playmakers
Repertory Theater at UNC and the Raleigh
Little Theater offer annual series of theater productions
which are well-known for the creativity and quality of production.
The Alltel
Pavilion at Walnut Creek features big name bands and artists
during the long season for outdoor performances.
The recently remodeled BTI
Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh provides a schedule
of Broadway
and off-Broadway shows as well as ballet, opera and orchestral
concerts. Fine
restaurants provide opportunities for dining pleasure
from a wide variety of cuisines from around the world.
Sports enthusiasts will find a lot to recommend the Piedmont.
Of course, there are the well-renowned local universities
with their respective teams as well a professional hockey
and 1A baseball teams. For those who enjoy playing sports
themselves climate is conducive to outdoor activities almost
any time of the year. There are generally only two months
(January and February) cold enough to restrict outdoor time.
But it is not unusual to have breaks in even those months
when the sun shines and paths in our local woods invite hikers
to savor a hint of the spring to come. Spring and fall seasons
are long and mild with beautiful foliage abundant everywhere.
Many people find the state a great destination for vacations.
Cost of living is moderate compared to most urban areas in
the country. A wide variety of housing options exists within
easy commuting range. Apartments and houses are readily available
for rent and many residents have found purchase of a home
an affordable option. Whether your taste in life style is
for town or country living you should be able to find what
you want.
The generally wholesome environment, an exceptional school
system and strong community organizations of all sorts make
it no wonder that living in Chapel Hill has received high
ratings in national surveys. The area has enticed a significant
proportion of graduates from the program to continue their
professional and personal lives here after residency and the
area is well known as a potential site for retirement. To
many it is difficult to imagine living anywhere else once
they have experienced life in Chapel Hill.
