Welcome to the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Family Medicine
Research & Scholarship site. The Research and Scholarship
Program is one of the Department’s major programs.
The Department’s research and scholarship mission is:
“(The) promotion of the discovery and dissemination
of knowledge important to clinical practice, teaching and
improvements in the organization of health care. We aspire
for our research to answer questions that matter in individual
and population primary health care.”
Important principles for our program and its mission are
a commitment to:
• both research (discovering new knowledge) and other
forms of scholarship (integrating work from disparate fields,
translating work to new audiences, innovating in education)
• research and scholarship that are important to people
and populations and to their primary care needs
• research and scholarship that address clinical,
teaching, the organization of health care services and policy
issues.
The Department’s strategies to support, strengthen
and expand its research and scholarship efforts include:
• supporting the research interests and efforts
of its senior and junior faculty on whose shoulders our
current and future research success rests
• linking our work to the many resources, centers
and faculty collaborators within UNC’s rich scholarly
environment
• building a solid financial foundation through grants
from federal (NIH, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality,
Health Resources and Services Administration, CDC), state
and foundation sources
• providing research fellowship programs whose graduates
have been the lifeblood of the Department’s growth
in researchers
• providing leadership in developing the science and
contributions of primary care research across North Carolina
and nationally.
