Course Title: Global Health in Family Medicine – Chapel Hill and Honduras
Faculty: Martha Carlough, MD, MPH and Lisa Slatt, M.Ed.
Prerequisites:
1. Completion of at least six months of third year clerkships (Both 3rd and 4th year students are eligible). Students interested in Family Medicine will get first priority, and if slots are available it will also be open as an elective to anyone interested.
2. Spanish skills: Students with any level of Spanish language skills will
be accepted. The
Spanish language component of the course will be customized based on entry-level
assessment completed prior to start of course.
Duration: 4 weeks
Meeting Times: 8:00 AM – 5 PM first two weeks; second two weeks in Honduras
Credit Hours: 6
Meeting Place: Chapel Hill, Dept. of Family Medicine and Santa Lucia, Honduras
Learning Objectives: At end of course students will be able
to:
1. Describe the impact of major causes of morbidity and mortality in the two
thirds world and the social, economic and political determinants.
2. Using examples of evidence-based large scale interventions, describe key
components that have made certain strategies more effective in reducing global
disease burden.
3. Describe how traditional health care practices and cultural and language
diversity can affect health care.
4. Demonstrate increased proficiency in speaking Spanish.
5. Participate in the implementation of a small scale community based interventions
to address an identified public health issue with the staff of “Shoulder
to Shoulder” in Honduras (www.shouldertoshoulder.org)
Learning Activities: First two weeks of rotation in Chapel Hill, students will participate in seminars covering specific issues associated with global health participate in medical Spanish classes appropriate to their fluency level. During the second two weeks of the rotation, students will travel to St. Lucia Honduras to work in clinics and on community health projects with Shoulder to Shoulder staff.
To enroll: Permission of one of the course directors (Martha_carlough@med.unc.edu or lisa_slatt@med.unc.edu) is required. In addition, a DEPOSIT of $500.00 by November 1, 2007 is REQUIRED. The balance of the course fees are due by January 1, 2008.
Fees: 1200 USD (plus airfare to Honduras, approx. 700 USD).
Fees cover: food, lodging, and in-country transportation in Honduras; Spanish
language education offered through CHICLE in Chapel Hill; other course materials.
Other expenses NOT covered by the fees include travel immunizations and international
health insurance as required for all students from UNC/CH.
