Learning Objectives: At end of course students
will be able to:
• Experience the breadth of Family Medicine.
• More effectively incorporate behavioral medicine into
care of patients.
• More effectively take care of women in primary care
settings.
Learning Activities: The focus will be multifaceted,
incorporating several different areas appropriate for family
medicine. Areas include behavioral health; rural medicine;
women's health. The student can identify 2 of the 3 areas
of greatest interest to them for emphasis. Areas should be
chosen prior to the rotation and the rotation will be designed
to include focus in those areas. Joe Kertesz will be involved
in the design of the behavioral health component, and will
incorporate video precepting and clinic time. The Penslow
Clinic Rural site is willing to commit to one day/week to
allow the students some rural medicine exposure. Dr. Yates
will develop the women's health focus, with the goal of incorporating
prenatal visits, possibly colposcopy or other women-focused
procedures, and well woman exams.
As part of the selective, the students are responsible for
a project. This will entail the students preparing a topic
for a lecture/presentation at the Residency PM Conference
series at the end of their 4th week. The topic could involve
one or more of the areas of interest. This will assure that
the rotation is educationally sound and will incorporate an
academic medicine component, as well.
