University of North Carolina Department of Family
Medicine
Barbara E. Walker, DO, Interim Program Director
The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Residency
in Family Medicine is fully accredited and operated in affiliation
with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the
Coastal Area Heath Education Center and the New Hanover Health
Network. The mission is to recruit, train and retain excellent
Family Medicine physicians for the southeastern region of
North Carolina. This program was initiated in 1996 after identification
of a shortage of primary care providers, particularly Family
Physicians, in this region. The hope is to ultimately improve
the health care indicators through the vision of recruitment,
training and retention of Family Medicine physicians. The
Family Medicine Center uses an electronic medical record in
patient care. It is a clerkship site for the required third
year Family Medicine clerkship sponsoring five, six-week clerkships
with an average of three students per clerkship. A Community
Preceptor Development Seminar Series was begun in 2003 with
seminars offered to regional physicians and designed to educate
and strengthen their skills as preceptors of residents and
medical students. Weekly Friday afternoon didactic conferences
are offered. The residents and faculty participate in clinically
oriented Family Medicine research with successful publication
of clinical inquiries in the Journal of Family Practice.
