University of North Carolina Department of Family
Medicine
Mary Hall, MD, Chair
The Family Practice Residency Program in Charlotte
is based at Carolinas Medical Center,
the flagship hospital of Carolinas HealthCare System.
A distinguishing feature of the department is the opportunity
for residents to learn at 3 very different sites: the urban
and suburban FPCs of the main program and the Monroe location
of the rural program. The mission of the program is to develop
residents into highly-competent professionals who are well-prepared
to work in a variety of settings and meet the needs of their
patients and communities of choice upon graduation. The residents
from all three sites (urban, suburban and rural) intermingle
and share the features of their unique settings. Each year
the residents design and implement a project which focuses
on the needs of a select community. The medically underserved
community of the Northwest Corridor is the location of the
Biddlepoint Family Practice and the urban residency site.
As a well defined community, it offers a rich resource for
residents to implement a
COPC model. The Charlotte campus hosts 25-29 3rd year clerkship
students per year and 5-6 acting interns. Faculty have
been active in developing a chronic illness curriculum. Pharmacoloy
and Psychology students from UNC also train with the department.
