Office of Development

The mission of the Office of Development at the UNC Department of Family Medicine is to raise funds for those areas most critical in sustaining the success and excellence of the Department. Some of the Department’s highest priorities are:

Establishing Endowed Professorships: This allows the Department to recruit and maintain the best faculty in the country, thereby improving the Department’s education and curriculum.

Medical Student Endowment: The interest of this endowment will be made available each year to the predoctoral section for student education.

Unrestricted Gifts: This would allow the Department to fund the areas of grea need within the Department, including money for equipment and facility upgrades.

Types of Gifts

You may make your gift to the Department in various forms, using well-recognized gift vehicles that address your circumstances. You may wish to speak with your financial advisor before you give, to determine the most appropriate way to structure your gift to benefit yourself, your family, and the Department of Family Medicine.

Gifts of Cash: An outright gift of cash is usually the simplest method of giving. It is not subject to gift or estate taxes, and you can deduct the gift to the full extent of IRS rulings.

Gifts of Securities: You may deduct the full fair market value of long-term appreciated securities and avoid any tax on capital gain.

Gifts by Bequest: One of the easiest and most common ways for you to make a gift to the Department of Family Medicine is through a bequest in your will. Bequests work particularly well if you are unable to make an immediate outright gift or if you have concerns about your long-term planning, but believe in our programs and want to support the future of Family Medicine.

Life Income Gifts: By transferring property to the management of a trustee and establishing a life income arrangement from the principal of this property, you can make a substantial gift to the Department. Life income gifts can take several forms: charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, pooled income funds.

Other vehicles: Real estate, personal property, corporate matching gifts, closely held stock.
